Welcome Prospective Dance Students!

Admission into the BA dance degree is by audition.

The BA Dance Audition for 2013 entry will take place on Friday, the 15th and Saturday, the 16th of March 2013.  In-person audition is strongly recommended.  However, if applicants are unable to audition in person, they may submit a DVD audition.  Please see the Audition Information and Online Application page for more information.  Once the audition application has been completed, further details will be provided.

Program Overview

Dance at the University of Calgary launches students into a world of creativity. Through intensive studio training combined with rigorous academic study of dance, our graduates enter into the dance profession prepared and eager to succeed.

The Bachelor of Arts in Dance offers some of the best training in Canada due to our unique offerings. Here are some of the opportunities that await you: 

  • Specialize in performance and composition with our focused concentration in Choreography and Performance
  • Create dance for the camera. All students in the BA program are required to take Dance for the Camera in which they choreograph and edit their own dance works for the screen.
  • Perform on campus and in the Calgary community with local, national and international choreographers. Work with professional artists in the Calgary arts scene to jumpstart your professional performance experience. The program connects qualified students to professional companies for apprenticeships in their final year of study.
  • Travel abroad with international travel study courses. Experience dance in Cuba, Poland, Africa, and in many other international venues to broaden your worldview and experience the cultural diversity of dance.
  • Take classes and workshops with internationally recognized guest artists.
  • Make direct community connections through Urban Dance Connect and experience the power of dance in varied populations.
  • Study a diversity of special topics including African dance, Contact Improvisation, Hip Hop, Site-Specific Dance, and many other forms.

The BA Dance curriculum offers students the opportunity to explore dance from multiple perspectives. Students delve into choreography, performance, technique, improvisation, dance for the camera, dance science, world dance, history, and theory in order to understand the place of dance in the 21st century. From ballet to contact improvisation, hip hop to contemporary, dance at the U of C helps student gain in-depth experience as well as a broad understanding of a range of cultural forms. With equal emphasis on both practice and analysis, our liberal arts program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in professional performance, choreography, scholarship, and education, as well as further dance study in graduate programs.

The faculty members in the Dance Department believe passionately in the ability of dance study to foster creative expression and critical thinking.  With creative and scholarly portfolios that boast national and international performances and publications, the faculty is prepared to guide students through an intensive educational experience.
